From 3pm to 10pm Santa Rosa will celebrate its 150th Birthday – can you say “Sesquicentennial”? On that Saturday, in Courthouse Square there will be live music from local bands, children’s activities, food vendors, historical displays, speeches, burying of the new time capsule, information from community partners, ending with a movie shown in the Square at 8pm. The winner of the youth art contest will be also be displayed and the winner of the writing contest will read the winning entry.
On February 1, 2018, one of two time capsules buried in Old Courthouse Square on March 16th, 1968 was unearthed and delivered to the Anthropology Lab at Sonoma State University. There, it was opened in a controlled environment where the contents will be documented and conserved. After the preservation is completed, the artifacts will be readied for a public unveiling on March 17th, 2018 in Courthouse Square from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. The community is invited and encouraged to attend on that date.
The community is also invited to view the Time Capsule contents at the History Museum of Sonoma County on March 24th when admission will be free from 1:00 until 5:00. Join us for a beer, wine and light appetizer reception at 2:00, hear an Anthropologist speak about the capsule contents at 2:30 and watch the documentary movie Santa Rosa: Chosen Spot at 3:30. The Time Capsule contents will continue to reside in the Museum through the summer.
The second of the two time capsules will continue to reside in the vault until 2068, Santa Rosa’s Bicentennial.
